Commercial Photography for Fitness Fashion in Sydney

I was delighted to be chosen for a commercial activewear photography assignment, creating images for the launch of new activewear brand ROOKi Australia.

The brand was launching a range of leggings, sports bras and tops, and needed images for an online store, advertising campaigns, marketing collateral,  and social media campaigns.

I was delighted once again to be working with WINK models, with Lia Jones being chosen as the the talent for the shoot.

Our location was a cross fit gym. This gave us lots of space to set up for different shots and various bits of equipment to use for props. And of course this was the perfect backdrop to create great action shots.

The Shoot

We started the shoot with a relatively simple shot showing the back of the a sports bra.

The first image I created was of the back of a sports bra, highlighting the straps.

Here are some behind the scenes photos taken by my assistant, helping me give a greater insight into how the photos were created. This first shot shows the set up.

This next photo shows me discussing the pose with my client while we review images on the laptop.

Tethered capture (shooting connected to a laptop, so the images are instantly displayed on screen), allows the client to see images in real time and for fast review and finessing of the photos.

We then moved into another relatively easy pose, with Lia showing off the front and side of a sports bra and leggings.

The second image was a static pose, showing off the sports bra and leggings.

Now we were warmed up and well into the swing of things, we moved on to photos on the rings. First, Lia held a strong pose with her legs tucked under.

I love the lighting on this shot, with a soft directional light in front from a large gridded softbox and a strong rimlight highlighting the side.

Here the BTS showing the set up (and yet another photo of the back of my head!)

Lia then suggested that she could flip over and hang upside down! So after changing into a sports bra instead of the crop top I was able to create this image.

I love this shot as a creative and innovative way to show off the straps on the back of the sports bra, and love Lia for being game and suggesting the pose. It’s really wonderful to work with creative and energetic talent!

Next we gave Lia a well deserved rest and moved onto a sitting pose. We took a variety of angles of Lia sitting on a box, including some from high up as seen in this BTS.

Jesse climbing up onto stacked boxes to get a high angle.

It’s always a good test of balance getting up onto boxes like this because once I’ve raised the camera to my eye my perspective changes!

In the end the client selected a photo from a lower angle as she felt this shows off the products better.

Back on her feet again, Lia changed into a sleeveless top for our next shot. This was focused on the branding from the rear view.

Finally, we got Lia onto an exercise bike for the last shot with her.

Flat Lays

All that remained to shoot on the day were some flat lays of the products.

Later, back in the studio, I photographed all the items on a mannequin to create the “ghost mannequin” product shots for the online store.

I loved shooting this assignment, working with great talent, HMUA and assistant, and under the direction of a wonderful client who gave just the right balance between instruction and creative freedom.
